Another email I got today (Sunday):
Hi Professor,
The interviews for Facebook, Amazon and HCL have been lined up for 9th and 10th ( Today and Tomorrow).
Can there be a provision made wherein we could submit the assignment a day later.Regards
H
My response:
Hi H,***************************************
I understand the pressures of the placement process. So, feel free to submit a day late.
However, I must point out that the HWs were released a week ago. There would be students who diligently worked the HW into their schedules to be able to submit on time.
Hence, to be fair to such students, there will be a small (nominal only) points dunk for late submissions. Again, its only a nominal penalty, nothing major I assure you. I hope that is OK.
Received this Q over email from CS:
Dear Professor,My response:I have 2 doubts regarding the questions in the homework
Session 3 Homework 1: Questionnaire Design
Sir, in the word file you sent us there are only 2 questions but on the blog there is an additional survey question??
Q3. Design a small, simple survey to assess 'showrooming' propensity among 20 something SEC A1 (or upper middle class) people. Program the survey into qualtrics and send me the link in the following google form. Only one submission allowed per person.I am confused as to which one to go by? 2 questions or 3?
Another doubt,
Sampling Basics - Session 3 Homework 2Q1. Suppose you find that a third of your sample of 100 of PGP Class of 2013ers uses Vodafone.
(a) Can you find the confidence half-interval (X) at the 99%, 95% and 90% confidence levels respectively around this estimate? Please write the formula you use and the answers you obtain.
(b) Estimate the minimum sample size for your confidence half-interval (X) to be no larger than 0.075 at the 95% confidence level. Please write the formula used & answer obtained.Sir, is there a data set for this question? Otherwise how can I calculate the S.D without the data points.
Or alternatively is the S.D and the Mean given??Confidence half-interval (X) =Z √ s2 /n (I am using this formula to solve the questions)
Hi CS,Hope that clarifies.Session 3 HW1 - all 3 Qs must be done. The first two in the HW word doc and the last programmed in qualtrics websurvey software. The survey link pasted in the google form (URL provided in the blogpost).
Pls ask IT to help with your qualtrics access (in case you are new to it). Actually, if you've never programmed a websurvey before, then consider this HW in MKTR an excellent opportunity to be exposed to it in a controlled and simple manner.
Re the sampling basics Q, no, there's no need for a separate dataset. You've been asked to compute confidence intervals around a proportion estimate (p=1/3 and n=100 is given already). You don't really need any further data. Just use the formulae from the lecture slides. Feel free to ask your peers about how to do it but pls do it yourself in the end.

Hi all,
There are 3 HWs for session 3. I list the HWs below. But first, some quick notes:
- The HWs now account for 40% of the course grade. More importantly, they now shoulder the entire burden of learning-by-doing in a tools heavy MKTR course. So they will likely involve some workload on your part.
- To lessen the workload burden and to foster learning from peers, Pls know that in MKTR you are free to consult your peers when doing your HWs (especially the ones requiring R).
- However, the interpretation, design and write-up for any HW should be entirely your individual effort.
- A word document with the questions for the 3 HWs is attached in the HW email. Pls hand-write or type in the space provided only.
- Submit a hard-copy during the class break of Session 5, on Monday 10-December.
Here is the first Homework:
Pls read this Economic times article (from 3 days ago) on a recent phenomenon they call 'showrooming'.
Consumers spot deals in stores, close them online; showrooming threatens to make life difficult for electronics retailers.
Now answer the following questions in the space given on the HW document:
Q1. What (mktg related) constructs might be useful in understanding 'showrooming' as a phenomenon? List at least 2.
Q2. How might you measure any two of the above listed constructs using a questionnaire instrument. List some observable proxy variables or behaviors for the constructs that you can directly query consumers for.
Q3. Design a small, simple survey to assess 'showrooming' propensity among 20 something SEC A1 (or upper middle class) people. Program the survey into qualtrics and send me the link in the following google form. Only one submission allowed per person.
In term 5 this year, MKTR students designed a survey to help Flipkart figure out which product categories would be most lucrative to enter into. Some Questionnaire design tips I wrote that might generally apply in this case too are here: Tips for questionnaire design homework
Some of the good Questionnaire submissions I received from the Co2013 in Hyd are mentioned in this blog-post.
The second HW deals with taking apart a real-world questionnaire (used by a mid-size retail chain in the US Northeast in 2008). The questionnaire is attached in the HW email.
The third HW deals with some sampling size calculation Qs. Use formulae we saw in class today.
Well, thats' it from me. Pls use the blog comments section for reaching me fastest.

ReplyDeleteHi Professor, just wanted to confirm that the HW is due in class 5 (10 Dec).
ReplyDeleteHi Saurabh,
ReplyDeleteYes, its due on 10-dec. I general, all HWs now on will be due a week out.

Does anyone know how to set up the qualtrics survey? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Anon,
DeleteAsk IT to provide login and password details for your qualtrics student account.
The websurvey programming itself is straightfwd, IMO. Feel free to ask peers around for help on specific aspects.

Reading through the above blog post was very tedious...wish there was a better way to do this...
ReplyDeleteHi Anon,
DeleteTks for the feedback. Some pointed suggestions on what exactly could be done would be helpful.
